Do You Need Dental Fillings?

At Dental Care Shawnee, we will conduct a thorough examination first. Cavities are caught on regular visits or when a patient complains of discomfort. They’re usually easy to spot during the examination. One aspect of cavities that we can have a hard time determining is depth. It’s difficult to assess how deep a cavity is by looking at it from the outside.

A dental x-ray might be required so we can know how deep the cavity is. Knowing the depth of a cavity helps us treat it better. The shallower a cavity is, the easier it is to treat.

The Procedure

There are many types of dental fillings. Metals like gold and silver are often used for teeth in the back of the mouth, so they don’t show when we smile. Metal fillings last about 15 years. Composite resin, porcelain, and ceramic fillings are more cosmetic and can be used for front teeth. Composite resin fillings last between 5 to 10 years. Ceramic and porcelain fillings can last about ten years.

The cavity has to be cleaned before we can place the filling and make it stick using gel and ultraviolet light. Before we begin, we’ll numb the tooth and the area surrounding it using local anesthesia. The effect of anesthesia will wear off in a couple of hours. When your mouth is no longer numb, you can go back to eating. Teeth with fillings still need to be brushed and taken care of.
