Dental Sealants in Shawnee, KS

We’re here to provide your children and family members with dental sealants in Shawnee, KS. At Dental Care Shawnee, we value preventive dentistry. Natural teeth can be replaced with implants or bridges, but why replace something nearly perfect? Despite the advances in restorative dentistry, there's nothing better than natural teeth.

Dental sealants are procedures that we can use to protect your child’s dental health. These procedures are short and painless. Your child will remain comfortable, and the procedure will be over before they even know it.

Why Get Dental Sealants?

Parents often ask us about dental sealants and how important they are. As your child starts to develop adult teeth, dental sealants become recommended. Sealants are applied to the premolars and molars. These are hind teeth that have tiny fissures and notches. These notches are natural and not a sign of damage.

Bacteria can take advantage of these notches because they’re hard to clean with a toothbrush. This can allow bacteria to grow and replicate without restrictions. If left for years, the bacteria in these fissures and notches will start to cause trouble. Sealants can occlude these areas and stop bacteria from using them as hiding spots.

Children should get sealants between the ages of 6 and 15. As new premolars and molars erupt, they should be treated with sealants. Adults can get dental sealants too.

The Procedure

As we mentioned earlier, this is a straightforward procedure. It’s done in a few minutes and only takes one visit to provide one or more teeth with dental sealants. A conditioning gel is used to prepare the teeth, so they stick better to the sealants. Sealants are then placed, and we use ultraviolet light to harden them.

Your child can go home as soon as we’re done. There are no restrictions or special precautions to take. Dental sealants last for a few years. Some teeth might require repeat applications of dental sealants. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call or visit us.
